What Is Tempered Glass?

Glass is an integral component of many products and applications and has become an essential part of our daily lives. Tempered glass, in particular, has become an increasingly popular choice due to its exceptional strength, durability, and safety features.

The Hot and Cold Process

This glass is a type of glass that is processed through thermal or chemical treatment to increase its strength and durability. Creating it involves heating it up at high temperatures and then rapidly cooling it with a stream of cold air. This process creates a surface compression layer on the glass, which makes it stronger and more resistant to bending or breakage. As a result, tempered glass is much safer than regular glass and is designed to break into tiny, blunt pieces rather than sharp shards.

Thermal and Chemical Tempering

There are two methods for tempering glass: thermal tempering and chemical tempering. Thermal tempering involves heating the glass to around 620°C and then rapidly cooling it. The sudden cooling process generates surface compression on the glass, making it five to seven times stronger than untempered glass. On the other hand, the chemical tempering method involves treating the glass with various chemical solutions that create an ion exchange to generate surface compression. This treatment process makes the glass more robust and durable.

Multiple Uses

Once the glass has been tempered, it can be used in various applications, including mobile phones, vehicle windows, and architectural structures. The manufacturing process is essential in creating this glass, ensuring it is of the highest quality and meets specific safety standards.

Customisable Tempered Glass

Another benefit is that it’s highly customisable. Depending on the intended application, it can be made in different shapes, sizes, and thicknesses. The glass can also be coated with various materials, such as UV-protective or anti-glare coatings, to enhance its overall performance and appearance.

Tempered glass has become essential in our daily lives due to its strength, durability, and safety features.
