Transforming “The Old Bailey”: Bespoke Glass for a Historic 212-Room Premier Inn
Category: Hotels

Date: December 2025
Duration: 9 Months
Location: Whitbread
Executive Summary
When Whitbread set out to transform a former police station into a modern Premier Inn, they needed partners who could handle the complexities of a listed building. Working alongside main contractor Gilbert-Ash, Abbey Glass provided highly tailored glass solutions for this major heritage project. Between March 2025 and December 2025, we manufactured and supplied bespoke bathroom glass for all 212 bedrooms, helping to prepare the hotel for its successful opening in February 2026.
The Challenge
Often referred to as “the Old Bailey”, this former police station is a listed building with deep historic roots. The project demanded that much of the building’s original character remain intact. The developers carefully retained the original façade, the rear, the entrance foyer, the historic staircase and the original Reading Room.
Because we were working within an older historic structure, the existing building presented significant design challenges. Room dimensions varied widely across the property. Standard, off-the-shelf glass products would not fit the unique spaces. We needed to overcome these physical constraints while maintaining a premium finish suitable for a modern hotel.
Our Solution
To meet these strict requirements, Abbey Glass took a fully bespoke approach. We manufactured custom glass installations tailored to the dimensions of each room. Our team supplied and fitted:
- Bespoke bathroom entrance doors
- Custom shower screens
- Main bathroom mirrors made to measure for every suite
- Tailored glass windows
By producing every piece to exact specifications, we ensured a flawless fit across all 212 bedrooms without compromising the building’s historic framework.
The Results
The demanding installation phase was completed on schedule by December 2025. This allowed the stunning new Premier Inn to open its doors to guests in February 2026.
The finished hotel brilliantly merges modern comfort with historic charm. It features excellent restaurant and café facilities. Furthermore, the central atrium has been beautifully transformed into a gallery and exhibition space that highlights the rich history of the former police station. Every bathroom reflects a high standard of finish, providing guests with a bright, functional and luxurious space.
Conclusion
This project demonstrates our ability to deliver large-scale commercial glazing within highly sensitive heritage environments. By combining modern manufacturing precision with a deep respect for historic architecture, we helped bring a classic building back to life. If you require tailored glass manufacturing for your next commercial development, our team has the expertise to help you succeed.
