Featured Projects
The Velvet Coaster, Blackpool (2015)
Scope of Work: Glass balustrade, aluminium works and a glass central lift lobby.
Challenges and Solutions:
Transforming the Velvet Coaster into a modern and inviting venue required a fresh, bold design, with glass as a central architectural feature. A significant challenge was ensuring structural soundness without compromising the aesthetics, particularly with the extensive use of glass in high-stress areas like the balustrade and lift lobby. Abbey Glass applied precision engineering techniques to create custom fittings that integrated seamlessly with the frames while providing maximum safety and durability. By collaborating closely with the design team, Abbey Glass achieved a sleek, transparent look that accentuated the venue’s contemporary character.
This project set the tone for the partnership with JD Wetherspoon, showcasing Abbey Glass’s ability to deliver complex designs on time and to exact specifications.
The George Hotel, Brecon (2017)
Contractor: Coccion Construction
Scope of Work: Glass balustrade for a historic stairwell.
Challenges and Solutions:
Balancing modern safety requirements with preserving heritage features presented a significant challenge in this Grade II-listed building. The original staircase was an architectural focal point, necessitating a design that would enhance its beauty without overshadowing its historical integrity.
Abbey Glass innovated with a dual-layer balustrade system, which combined an internal, structurally sound glass barrier with a subtle, sympathetic outer frame. Collaborative work with conservation experts ensured the solution met stringent building regulations while respecting the hotel’s historic significance. This delicate balance of old and new captured the client’s vision perfectly, elevating the venue’s aesthetics without compromising its charm.
Kevans Port, Camden (2020)
Scope of Work: Glass balustrade for a bridge and aluminium glazing for the frontage.
Challenges and Solutions:
This project was particularly unique due to the need for a suspended glass bridge. Safety, structure and visual impact were the key priorities. Abbey Glass faced the challenge of designing a balustrade that offered the strength to support heavy foot traffic and the visual transparency to maintain the sense of openness that glass affords.
The team modelled the loads and stress points using cutting-edge engineering software to create a bespoke installation that achieved an exceptional result. The aluminium-glazed frontage further modernised the venue, complementing the interior’s contemporary feel. Attention to detail, down to the millimetre, was crucial in achieving the sleek, flawless finish that defined this project.
Newquay (2016)
Scope of Work: Internal mirror features and balustrades.
Challenges and Solutions:
Mirrors created an opportunity to enhance the sense of space within the Newquay venue dramatically. However, mirrors combined with glass balustrades posed the challenge of avoiding visual distortion while ensuring a seamless aesthetic.
Abbey Glass tackled this with precisely calibrated mirror coatings and strategically positioned lighting to maximise depth without overwhelming the design. The final installation beautifully enhanced the customer experience, creating an interior that was both inviting and contemporary. This project demonstrated not only Abbey Glass’s skill but also its capacity for transforming everyday venues into exceptional spaces.
The Mount Stuart, Cardiff (2018)
Contractor: Carter Lauren
Scope of Work: Glass balustrade and a curved glass staircase.
Challenges and Solutions:
The curved glass staircase presented a standout challenge in design and execution. Shaping glass to fit the required dimensions demanded ultra-precise manufacturing techniques, as even slight misalignments could impact the integrity of the end product. Furthermore, ensuring that the final structure complied with safety regulations while appearing seamless required expert craftsmanship.
Through detailed planning and the use of innovative manufacturing methods, Abbey Glass produced curved panels that fit perfectly into the staircase framework. The result was a stunning centrepiece that amplified the venue’s visual appeal and showcased Abbey Glass’s capability in delivering complex, bespoke designs.
