Bespoke windows and doors in Wales. The successful completion of a two-storey young adults’ supported living residential home project highlights Abbey Glass’s ability to balance safety, functionality and aesthetics. This project, undertaken in collaboration with Specialist Support Services, involved the design, manufacture and installation of approximately 51 windows and 15 doors, tailored to meet the unique needs of the facility and its residents.

The remit was initially straightforward: to price a door and window project using toughened/laminated glass to meet building regulations. However, the project evolved into a more complex, bespoke solution following discussions with the Quantity Surveyor and their client. The challenge was to ensure the windows in residents’ bedrooms provided both safety and style, avoiding the less aesthetically pleasing option of screwing polycarbonate sheets to the window frames. We seamlessly integrated a cutting-edge blinds system directly within the glazing specification, embedding the blinds between two panes of glass rather than positioning them outside the window. This innovative solution not only enhanced the sleek aesthetic but also provided a practical, low-maintenance alternative to traditional external blinds.

Collaborative Design Process

Abbey Glass worked closely with the Quantity Surveyor, the client and GRM Windows to develop a solution that met the dual objectives of safety and design. Several onsite meetings were held to understand the client’s vision and requirements. The result was a custom anthracite unit designed to fit within a Rehau window system, widely regarded as the Rolls-Royce of window systems.

The final design incorporated a technically advanced triple-glazed system, which was actually a double-glazed laminated unit with an integrated polycarbonate panel. This innovative combination, glass, glass and polycarbonate, ensured compliance with building regulations while providing enhanced safety. Additionally, certain areas of the building featured integrated anti-ligature blinds in the window frames, further enhancing the facility’s safety and usability.

Testing and Approval

To ensure the solution met the rigorous safety standards required, Abbey Glass supplied a sample unit for testing. The client tested the unit’s durability using hammers and pressure and reviewed the usability of the integrated blinds. The design was approved in March 2025, with installation commencing in May 2025.

Seamless Installation

The installation process of our bespoke windows and doors aligned with the contractor’s program, ensuring a smooth, efficient workflow. The bespoke windows and door systems were installed on schedule, contributing to the facility’s readiness for its official opening in the coming weeks.

Client Collaboration and Outcome

This project was a testament to Abbey Glass’s commitment to collaboration and innovation. By working closely with the client, the Quantity Surveyor and GRM Windows, we delivered a solution that exceeded expectations in both safety and style.

“This project exemplifies our ability to combine technical expertise with aesthetic considerations, ensuring the safety and comfort of residents while maintaining a modern and welcoming design. It was a privilege to contribute to such an important facility, and we are proud of the outcome.” Megan Williams, Head of Business Development at Abbey Glass
